Better integration of three of the federal government’s main strategies use of cloud, open source software (OSS) and open data – would collectively benefit their progress, a new report found.
“Integrating strategies around open government data, OSS, and cloud computing will help make government information more available to the American public, ensure that government decisions are driven by evidence, and increase the efficiency and lower the costs of government operations,” according to “Aligning Open Data, Open Source, and Hybrid Cloud Adoption in Government,” a report the IBM Center for The Business of Government released May 5 in collaboration with the Center for Open Data Enterprise.

As New Hampshire continues to loosen nearly all public health restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic, one sector remains on alert. Many long-term care facilities across the state have kept up limits on residents and visitors in recent weeks, even as vaccination rates rise and COVID-19 cases have fallen sharply in those settings. NHPR s health and equity reporter Alli Fam spoke with All Things Considered host Peter Biello about the tension within long-term care facilities.
Peter Biello: So what s been going on this week?
Alli Fam: This week s been kind of confusing, especially when it comes to guidelines for long-term care facilities. Last Monday, the state came out with some updated guidance for these facilities, an in-depth 16-page document. It outlined different phases of reopening. A lot of these were based on metrics like county case rates that dictated guidelines on things like trips outside the facility that aren t medically necessary

Last week, several Montana hospitals were graded on patient outcomes and safety measures by the nonprofit group Leapfrog. Most hospitals scored well, but other Leapfrog grades show room for improvement.
Emily Coyle with the Montana Healthcare Purchasers Association explained the Leapfrog grading system is meant to help consumers compare hospitals’ patient outcomes when deciding where to receive care or surgery.
“So the hospital safety grade uses over two-dozen measures including rates of preventable errors, injuries and infections, and whether hospitals have systems in place to prevent them.”

Last year as the COVID-19 pandemic forced many providers to close their doors for in-person care, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Congress acted quickly to provide waivers, administrative relief, and reimbursement for telehealth services so patients could receive care safely at home.
Many of these flexibilities are tied to the public health emergency (PHE) declaration that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has the authority to declare and extend under Section 319 of the Public Health Service Act. The PHE was most recently extended by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra for another 90 days on April 21. It is anticipated that HHS will keep the PHE in place for at least the remainder of 2021, and possibly longer, though permanent telehealth policy changes will need to come from Congress.
